The UES consignment haul deserves better than a generic hem job.
You just walked out of Gentlemen's Resale on East 81st with a cashmere overcoat that cost you a fraction of retail. Or you pulled a Comme des Garçons blazer off the rack at La Boutique Resale near Madison. The piece is right. The fitment is not. T(AA)ilor Shop is a Harlem-based mobile tailoring atelier — we travel to the Upper East Side to work on pre-loved garments, vintage scores, and heritage pieces that need someone who reads garments before touching them.
The UES has one of the densest concentrations of high-end resale in Manhattan. East 81st Street — Thrifter's Row — stacks Gentlemen's Resale, Designer Revival, and The Niche Shop within a single block. Housing Works in Yorkville moves Theory and Marni for nonprofit prices. Michael's Consignment on Madison pulls Chanel and Prada from UES closets.
Gentlemen's Resale (since 1992), Designer Revival (30+ years), The Niche Shop, Housing Works on Second Avenue, Michael's Consignment on Madison. Every one of these shops sells garments cut for someone else. Different shoulders. Different torso length. You copped it because the construction spoke to you — but the fit needs intervention. That's a fitment need. And we handle it.
Consignment finds that need precise fitment — sleeve shortening on a structured blazer without disrupting the lining. Taking in a vintage coat at the waist while keeping the original silhouette. Replacing a zipper on a scored leather jacket so the repair stays invisible. Heritage garments with sentimental value — a coat from a mother, a blazer from an estate — that need discreet repairs to stay wearable.
Maman on Third Avenue for table space and atmosphere. 787 Coffee for something low-key. Birch Coffee on 62nd — no Wi-Fi by design, fewer distractions. Your apartment works too. Yorkville walkup or a Park Avenue doorman building — we show up the same way either way.
The Met's Costume Institute holds one of the most important garment collections on the planet. This neighborhood understands that garments have value beyond the price tag. The UES fashion sensibility is what people now call quiet luxury — but up here, it was never loud in the first place. We extend garment life. We keep pre-loved threads being worn.
Shoulder adjustments are involved but absolutely doable. We assess the garment's construction and determine how much can be taken in without compromising the structure. We'll be honest about what's possible before any work starts.
We come to you. We'll meet you at a café on the UES — Maman, 787 Coffee, Birch Coffee — or at your apartment. One train from our Harlem home base.
We work across streetwear, vintage, heritage, and creative garments. Classic pieces — structured blazers, tailored coats, quality knitwear — are absolutely in our wheelhouse. What we don't do is corporate suit alterations on a conveyor belt.
That's exactly what we're here for. Inherited and heritage garments get careful, discreet repairs — we preserve the garment's character and history while making it structurally sound.
Pricing depends on the garment and the work. We assess in person — no generic price list, because no two garments are the same. Book a mobile fitting and we'll give you a clear quote before any work begins.
