Leather Alterations & Repair in NYC: What's Possible and What It Costs
Most tailors won't touch leather. There's a reason for that — leather doesn't forgive mistakes. Every needle hole is permanent. Every stitch has to be right the first time. There's no pinning, no basting, no "let me try that again." You need specialized needles, specialized thread, and years of experience reading how different skins behave.
We do leather work. It's one of our specialties.
What's Possible with Leather
Resizing is the most common request. Taking in a leather jacket that's too loose, shortening sleeves, adjusting the torso. This is real work — leather can't be let out (those old stitch holes show), so it can only go smaller. Cost: $120–$250 depending on how many areas need adjustment.
Repair covers tears, ripped seams, worn edges, and hardware replacement. A burst seam is straightforward — $75–$150. A torn panel is more complex — sometimes we reinforce from behind with a leather patch, sometimes we do exposed rivets and contrast stitching for an industrial look. $100–$250.
Relining is the big one. A vintage leather jacket with a destroyed lining is uncomfortable but the shell is fine. We strip the old lining and install a new one — usually viscose or silk. $180–$350.
What's Not Worth It
If the leather is cracked across large areas, dried out, or peeling — that's material failure, not damage. No amount of stitching fixes decomposing leather. We'll tell you honestly. If the hide is gone, the hide is gone.
The Mobile Advantage
Leather pieces are often heavy and awkward to transport. We come to you, evaluate the piece in your space, and give a written quote on the spot. Book at taailor.shop/book.
